Get the most from PPF
- Deposit before 5 April – a lump sum in the first days of the financial year earns interest for all 12 months.
- Paying monthly? Pay by the 5th; a deposit on the 6th misses that month’s interest.
- Keep the account alive with at least ₹500 a year to avoid a penalty.
Frequently asked questions
What is the current PPF interest rate?
The calculator starts at 7.1% a year, the rate the government has kept for PPF in recent quarters. Rates are reviewed every quarter, so check the latest notification and change the rate if needed.
How is PPF interest calculated?
Interest is worked out each month on the lowest balance between the 5th and the last day of the month, and added to your account on 31 March. That’s why depositing by 5 April (or by the 5th of each month) earns the most.
How much will I get if I invest ₹1.5 lakh a year in PPF?
At 7.1% with the full ₹1.5 lakh deposited by 5 April each year, your PPF matures at about ₹40.68 lakh after 15 years – ₹22.5 lakh deposited and about ₹18.18 lakh tax-free interest.
Can I extend PPF after 15 years?
Yes, in blocks of 5 years, as many times as you like. You can keep depositing (submit Form H within a year of maturity) or just let the balance earn interest. Choose an extension in the calculator to see the effect.
When can I withdraw from PPF?
Loans are allowed from the 3rd to the 6th financial year, up to 25% of the balance at the end of the second year before. From the 7th year you can make one partial withdrawal a year, up to 50% of the lower of the balances four years earlier or last year. The table shows both limits each year.
How much of my employer’s EPF contribution goes to my account?
Your employer pays 12% of basic + DA, but 8.33% of wages up to ₹15,000 (up to ₹1,250 a month) goes to the Employees’ Pension Scheme. The rest – usually 3.67% or more – goes to your EPF account.
Is EPF interest taxable?
EPF interest is tax-free on your own contributions up to ₹2.5 lakh a year (₹5 lakh if your employer doesn’t contribute). Interest on contributions above that, including VPF, is taxable. The calculator warns you if you cross the limit.
How is the EPS pension calculated?
Monthly pension = pensionable salary × pensionable service ÷ 70. Pensionable salary is capped at ₹15,000, so most people get up to ₹7,500 a month after 35 years. Members with 20+ years of service get 2 bonus years. You need at least 10 years of service for a pension.
