SIP growth at 12% a year
| Monthly SIP | 10 years | 20 years | 20 years, +10% a year |
|---|---|---|---|
| ₹5,000 | ₹11.6 L | ₹50 L | ₹99.4 L |
| ₹10,000 | ₹23.2 L | ₹99.9 L | ₹1.99 Cr |
| ₹25,000 | ₹58.1 L | ₹2.5 Cr | ₹4.97 Cr |
The formula
FV = P × [(1 + i)n − 1] ÷ i × (1 + i), where P is the monthly SIP, i is the monthly rate (annual return ÷ 12) and n is the number of months. With a step-up, each year’s instalments are larger, so the calculator adds them month by month.
Frequently asked questions
How is SIP return calculated?
Each monthly instalment grows at the monthly rate (annual return ÷ 12) until the end of the period. This calculator assumes you invest at the start of each month, which is how most Indian calculators and fund houses illustrate SIPs. Real mutual fund returns vary from month to month.
How much will a ₹5,000 monthly SIP grow to in 10 years?
At 12% a year, ₹5,000 a month for 10 years grows to about ₹11.6 lakh – ₹6 lakh invested and about ₹5.6 lakh in gains. At 15 years it’s about ₹25.2 lakh.
What is a step-up SIP?
A SIP you increase every year, usually with your pay rise. A ₹10,000 SIP for 20 years at 12% reaches about ₹1 crore; increasing it by 10% every year nearly doubles that to about ₹1.99 crore.
How much SIP do I need for ₹1 crore?
At 12% a year, about ₹19,800 a month for 15 years, or about ₹10,000 a month for 20 years. Use the Goal tab with your own numbers and step-up.
What return should I expect from equity mutual funds?
Indian equity funds have historically delivered around 10–14% a year over long periods, but returns aren’t guaranteed and can be negative in some years. Debt funds usually return 6–8%. Use a conservative number for planning and check the scenarios table.
How are SIP returns taxed?
For equity funds held over a year, long-term capital gains above ₹1.25 lakh in a financial year are taxed at 12.5%. Gains on equity units held for a year or less are taxed at 20%. Gains on debt funds bought after April 2023 are taxed at your slab rate. The estimate here assumes you redeem everything at the end.
SIP or lump sum – which is better?
A lump sum invested at the start earns more if markets rise steadily, but a SIP spreads your purchases over time (rupee cost averaging) and fits a monthly salary. Compare both using the tabs.
