Frequently asked questions
What is a URL slug?
The part of a web address that identifies a page in readable words – in example.com/blog/how-to-make-tea, the slug is how-to-make-tea. Good slugs are short, lowercase and describe the page.
What makes a good slug for SEO?
Keep it short (3–6 words, under about 60 characters), use your main keyword, separate words with hyphens, use lowercase only and leave out filler words. Avoid dates in evergreen content so the URL never looks out of date.
Should I use hyphens or underscores?
Hyphens. Google treats a hyphen as a space between words but may read an underscore as joining them, so tea-recipes is understood as two words and tea_recipes may not be.
What happens to accents and special characters?
Accents are removed (café becomes cafe), letters like ß and æ become ss and ae, and symbols can become words – & becomes “and”, % becomes “percent” and ₹ becomes “rupees”. Everything else that isn’t a letter or number is dropped.
Can I create slugs in Hindi or other languages?
Yes. Tick “Keep non-Latin letters” to keep Devanagari, Arabic, Chinese and other scripts. They display correctly in browsers, but when copied the link is percent-encoded and becomes much longer, so many sites prefer English slugs.
How does bulk mode handle duplicates?
If two titles produce the same slug, the second gets -2, the third -3 and so on, so every slug in the list is unique – just like most CMSs do automatically.
Should I change slugs on pages that are already published?
Only if necessary – changing a live URL breaks existing links. If you do, set up a 301 redirect from the old URL to the new one so visitors and search rankings carry over.
