How to convert a Unix timestamp

  1. Paste a timestamp or a dateSeconds, milliseconds, microseconds or nanoseconds are detected from the number of digits. Dates like 2026-10-13 14:30 work too.
  2. Pick a time zoneResults show UTC, the zone you pick and your own zone, plus ISO 8601, RFC 2822, SQL, Excel and calendar details.
  3. Convert many at oncePaste a list – or a whole log file – and every timestamp is converted. Copy any value with one click.

Frequently asked questions

What is a Unix timestamp?

The number of seconds since 00:00:00 UTC on 1 January 1970 (the Unix epoch), not counting leap seconds. It’s the same everywhere in the world at a given moment, which is why it’s used to store times in databases, APIs and logs.

How do I tell if a timestamp is in seconds or milliseconds?

Count the digits. Present-day timestamps have 10 digits in seconds (1791903600), 13 in milliseconds, 16 in microseconds and 19 in nanoseconds. JavaScript and Java use milliseconds; Unix, PHP and Python’s time.time() use seconds.

Does a Unix timestamp have a time zone?

No. A timestamp is always relative to UTC. The time zone only matters when you display it as a date or convert a local date and time into a timestamp – so 2026-10-13 09:00 in New York and in London give different timestamps.

What is the year 2038 problem?

Systems that store timestamps as signed 32-bit integers can only count up to 2,147,483,647 seconds, which is 03:14:07 UTC on 19 January 2038. One second later the value overflows. Modern systems use 64-bit integers, which last for billions of years.

What is the Excel serial date?

Excel and Google Sheets store dates as days since 30 December 1899, with the time as a fraction of a day. The tool shows the serial for the local date and time in the selected zone – paste it into a cell and format it as a date.

How are dates without a time zone read?

A date like 2026-10-13 14:30 is read in the selected time zone. Add Z or an offset (2026-10-13T14:30:00+05:30) to make it absolute. Numeric dates like 13/10/2026 are read day first.

Is anything uploaded?

No. Conversions run in your browser using its built-in time zone database.
