Common time differences
Differences change when one side starts or ends daylight saving time. India, Japan, China, Singapore and the Gulf do not use daylight saving.
| From India (IST, UTC+5:30) | US summer (Mar–Nov) | US / UK winter |
|---|---|---|
| New York (ET) | IST is 9 h 30 m ahead | IST is 10 h 30 m ahead |
| Chicago (CT) | 10 h 30 m ahead | 11 h 30 m ahead |
| Los Angeles (PT) | 12 h 30 m ahead | 13 h 30 m ahead |
| London (UK) | 4 h 30 m ahead (BST, Mar–Oct) | 5 h 30 m ahead (GMT) |
| Dubai (GST) | 1 h 30 m ahead all year | |
| Singapore (SGT) | 2 h 30 m behind all year | |
| Tokyo (JST) | 3 h 30 m behind all year | |
| Sydney (AET) | 4 h 30 m behind (Apr–Oct, AEST) | 5 h 30 m behind (Oct–Apr, AEDT) |
The US and the UK change clocks on different dates, so for two or three weeks each spring and autumn the gap between them is one hour smaller than usual. The timeline above always uses the real rules for the date you choose.
Frequently asked questions
How do I convert IST to EST?
Make sure India is the home (first) zone and New York is added, then enter the IST time. India is 9 h 30 m ahead of New York while the US is on daylight saving time (EDT, mid-March to early November) and 10 h 30 m ahead in winter (EST). So 7:00 pm IST is 9:30 am EDT, or 8:30 am EST.
Does it handle daylight saving time?
Yes. Conversions use your browser’s built-in time zone database, which follows each country’s daylight saving rules. Each zone also shows its next clock change, for example “Clocks go back 1 h on 1 Nov 2026”.
How do I find a good meeting time?
Green cells are 9 am–5 pm in that zone, yellow are 7–9 am and 5–9 pm, and grey is night. Columns outlined in green are working hours in every zone at once. If there are none, pick a column that is green or yellow everywhere.
What is the home zone?
The first zone in the list. The date and time you type are in this zone. Press the clock button on another zone to make it the home zone.
Why does a time say it doesn’t exist?
When clocks go forward, one hour is skipped – for example 2:30 am on the night the US changes to summer time. The tool moves to the next valid time and tells you.
What’s the difference between GMT and UTC?
For everyday use they are the same time. UTC is the precise scientific standard; GMT is the time zone used by the UK in winter. In summer the UK uses BST (UTC+1).
Are my zones saved?
Only if you press “Save zones”. They are then stored in this browser only, and “Forget” removes them.
