Frequently asked questions

How is GST split into CGST and SGST?

For a sale within the same state, the GST rate is split equally: 18% GST becomes 9% CGST (to the Centre) and 9% SGST (to the state). In union territories without a legislature, SGST is replaced by UTGST. For sales between states, the full rate is charged as IGST.

What is the taxable value?

It’s the price of the goods or services after any discount shown on the invoice, before GST. GST is calculated on this amount. If your prices include GST, the taxable value is price ÷ (1 + rate ÷ 100).

What are the GST rates now?

From 22 September 2025 most goods and services fall in the 5% or 18% slabs, with 40% for a small list of luxury and sin goods; 0%, 0.25% (rough diamonds) and 3% (gold and silver) remain. The 12% and 28% slabs still appear on older invoices, so they are included here. Always check the rate for your item’s HSN or SAC code.

Can one invoice have items at different GST rates?

Yes. Each line can have its own rate. The rate-wise summary groups the taxable value and tax by rate, the way GST invoices and returns show them.

Is GST calculated per line or on the total?

This calculator works out tax on each line and adds them up, which is how most billing software does it. Tick “Round total” to round the invoice to the nearest rupee, with the round-off shown separately.

Why is CGST sometimes one paisa different from SGST?

It shouldn’t be – both halves are rounded the same way on each line. If your billing software rounds the total GST first and then halves it, you may see a one-paisa difference.

How is the amount written in words?

Using the Indian numbering system with lakh and crore, as required on Indian invoices – for example ₹1,18,000 is “Rupees One Lakh Eighteen Thousand Only”.

Is the GST breakup calculator free?

Yes, completely free with no sign-up. Everything is calculated in your browser and nothing is saved.
