Make a GIF from images or a video
Turn a set of photos, screenshots or drawings into an animated GIF, or cut a short GIF from a video clip. Arrange the frames, choose the speed and size, add a caption and download the result – all in your browser, with no watermark and no sign-up.
How to make a GIF
- Add images or a videoDrop, paste or browse for photos, or switch to Video and pick the part of a clip you want.
- Arrange the framesDrag frames into order, or use the arrows. Duplicate a frame to hold it longer, or sort by file name.
- Adjust speed, size and loopSet the frame delay, output width and how many times it plays. Add a caption or a boomerang effect.
- Create and downloadPress Create GIF, check the result and file size, then download or share it.
Tips for smooth, small GIFs
Choose the right speed
| Type of GIF | Frame delay | Frames per second |
|---|---|---|
| Photo slideshow | 500–1000 ms | 1–2 |
| Simple animation or stop-motion | 100–200 ms | 5–10 |
| Video clip | 60–100 ms | 10–15 |
To make one frame stay on screen longer – for example a title card – duplicate it in the frame list instead of slowing down the whole GIF.
Keep the file size down
File size grows with width × height × number of frames. Halving the width cuts the pixels to a quarter, so a 480 px GIF is usually far smaller than an 800 px one. For video, 8–10 fps is often enough, and trimming the clip to the key moment helps more than any quality setting.
Understand the 256-colour limit
Every GIF frame is limited to 256 colours. Graphics, text and screenshots look crisp, but photos and smooth gradients can show banding. The High quality setting uses dithering to soften this, and Smaller file uses fewer colour calculations for a lighter result.
Supported files
Images: JPG, PNG, WebP, BMP, AVIF and GIF (the first frame is used). HEIC photos from iPhones open only in Safari; in other browsers convert them to JPG first. Video: MP4 (H.264) and WebM work in all modern browsers, and MOV usually works in Safari.
Frequently asked questions
How do I make a GIF from pictures?
Add two or more images, put them in the order you want, choose a frame delay and press Create GIF. The animation is built in your browser and you can download it straight away.
How do I turn a video into a GIF?
Open the Video tab and choose an MP4, WebM or MOV file. Pick the start and end of the clip and a frame rate, then press Extract frames. The frames appear in the list, where you can edit them before creating the GIF. Short clips of a few seconds work best.
Does the GIF have a watermark?
No. The GIF you download contains only your frames and the caption you add.
How can I make my GIF file smaller?
Use fewer frames, a smaller width and the “Smaller file” quality setting. For video, a lower frame rate such as 8–10 fps and a shorter clip make the biggest difference. Large areas of flat colour also compress better than photos.
What frame delay should I use?
About 500–1000 ms per frame suits a slideshow of photos, 100–200 ms suits simple animations, and 60–100 ms (10–15 fps) looks smooth for video. Many browsers slow down delays shorter than 20 ms, so the minimum here is 20 ms.
Why do the colours in my GIF look grainy or banded?
A GIF frame can use at most 256 colours, so photos and gradients have to be simplified. The “High” quality setting adds dithering, which blends nearby colours to reduce banding at the cost of a slightly larger file.
Can I make a GIF with a transparent background?
Not at the moment. Transparent areas in PNG images are filled with the background colour you choose, which you can set to match the page where the GIF will be shown.
Are my images or videos uploaded?
No. Frames are read, edited and encoded on your own device. Nothing is sent to our servers, and closing the tab discards everything.
