Remove a background in seconds

Tips for clean results
- Start with a sharp photo where the subject stands out clearly from the background.
- If the outline looks blurry, raise Edge sharpness; if it looks jagged, raise Smooth edges.
- Use Restore to paint back parts the AI missed and Erase for leftover patches. Press Ctrl+Z to undo a stroke.
- For marketplace product photos, choose a white background and tick Crop to subject.
- For signatures, pick the paper colour and increase the tolerance until grey shadows from the scan disappear.
How it works
AI mode runs U²-Net, an open-source salient object detection model (Apache 2.0 licence), with ONNX Runtime Web inside your browser. The model produces a mask at 320 × 320 pixels, which is scaled up to your image and refined by the edge controls. Colour mode compares every pixel with the colour you choose. In both cases the image stays on your device.
Frequently asked questions
Is this background remover free and without a watermark?
Yes. There is no sign-up, no watermark and no limit on how many images you process. Downloads are saved at the image’s original resolution, up to 4096 pixels on the longest side.
Are my photos uploaded to a server?
No. The AI model runs inside your browser, so the image never leaves your device. The first time you use AI mode your browser downloads the model (about 7 MB); after that it is cached and works faster.
How do I remove the background from a signature or logo?
Choose “Remove a colour”. The tool picks the paper or background colour automatically – or use “Pick from image” and click it. Raise the tolerance until the background disappears and lower it if parts of the signature start to fade. Download as PNG to keep the transparency.
Why are some edges rough or is part of the subject missing?
The AI estimates the subject at a reduced size, so fine detail such as hair can be soft and busy scenes can confuse it. Move the Edge sharpness and Smooth edges sliders, then use the Restore brush to bring back missing parts and the Erase brush to clean up leftovers. Photos with a clear subject and good contrast give the best results.
Can I put a new background behind the subject?
Yes. Under Background choose a solid colour, a blurred version of the original photo for a portrait look, or upload your own image. The download includes the new background.
Which format keeps the transparent background?
PNG and WebP both keep transparency. JPG does not support it, so transparent areas are filled with white unless you choose another background.
Does it work on a phone?
Yes, in current versions of Chrome, Safari, Edge and Firefox. The brush works with your finger. Very large photos are edited at up to 1600 pixels and exported at full size.
What does the AI actually detect?
It uses U²-Net, a model trained to find the most prominent object in a picture. It works well for a person, product, animal or vehicle in the foreground. If a photo has several subjects or no clear subject, combine it with the brush or use “Remove a colour”.
