How to calculate fuel cost
- Enter the tripType the distance, choose one way or round trip, and add passengers, tolls and parking if you like.
- Describe the vehiclePick petrol, diesel, CNG or electric, then enter its mileage and the fuel price – or tap a preset such as Hatchback or SUV.
- Compare and planSee the trip cost, cost per km and CO₂. Add trips a month for monthly and yearly costs, or compare with a second vehicle.
Fuel efficiency conversions
| km/L | L/100 km | MPG (US) | MPG (UK) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 10 | 10.0 | 23.5 | 28.2 |
| 15 | 6.7 | 35.3 | 42.4 |
| 20 | 5.0 | 47.0 | 56.5 |
| 25 | 4.0 | 58.8 | 70.6 |
Ways to cut your fuel bill
- Check tyre pressure monthly – under-inflated tyres can cost a few percent in mileage.
- Drive smoothly and use the highest sensible gear; hard acceleration and braking waste fuel.
- Remove extra weight and roof boxes when you don’t need them.
- Share rides – four people sharing a car pay a quarter of the fuel each.
- Compare running costs before buying: a CNG or electric car often pays back its higher price within a few years of regular driving.
Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate the fuel cost of a trip?
Divide the distance by your vehicle’s mileage to get the fuel needed, then multiply by the fuel price. For example, 250 km in a car that does 15 km/L uses 16.67 litres; at ₹100 a litre that costs ₹1,667.
How do I convert MPG to km/L?
Multiply US MPG by 0.425 to get km/L, or UK MPG by 0.354. To get litres per 100 km, divide 235.2 by US MPG or 282.5 by UK MPG. Switch units above and the calculator does it for you.
How do I find my car’s real mileage?
Fill the tank, reset the trip meter, drive normally, then fill up again. Divide the distance on the trip meter by the litres you added. Real-world mileage is usually 10–20% lower than the official figure.
Is an electric car cheaper to run than petrol?
Usually, yes. Turn on “Compare with another vehicle”, set it to Electric and enter your electricity price. Add how much more the EV costs and how many trips you make a month to see the payback period.
How is CO₂ worked out?
Burning a litre of petrol produces about 2.31 kg of CO₂ and a litre of diesel about 2.68 kg; a kilogram of CNG about 2.75 kg. For electric cars it depends on how your electricity is made – set the grid factor in kg CO₂ per kWh (around 0.7 in India, 0.2–0.4 in much of Europe and North America).
How should we split fuel costs on a shared trip?
Enter the number of people sharing the car and the calculator divides the fuel, tolls and parking equally. Use “Copy result” to send the amount to your group.
Does driving style change fuel cost?
Yes. Smooth acceleration, steady speeds around 60–90 km/h, correct tyre pressure and less idling can improve mileage by 10% or more. Air conditioning and roof racks reduce it.
Is the fuel cost calculator free?
Yes, completely free with no sign-up. Everything is calculated in your browser and nothing is saved.
