Tipping customs at a glance

Customs vary by place and by service, and they change over time. Treat these as common practice, not rules – and check the bill first, since a service charge may already be included.

Frequently asked questions

Should I tip on the amount before or after tax?

Etiquette guides in the US usually suggest tipping on the pre-tax amount, since tax isn’t part of the service. Many people tip on the total because it’s simpler – the difference is small. The tool does either.

How much should I tip in the US?

For table service, 15–20% is standard and 20% or more is common for good service. For takeaway, tipping is optional; for delivery, 10–20% with a few dollars minimum is typical. These are customs, not rules.

Do I have to pay a service charge in India?

No. Under 2022 guidelines from the Central Consumer Protection Authority, upheld by the Delhi High Court in 2025, restaurants cannot add a service charge automatically or make it compulsory. You can ask for it to be removed. Tipping is voluntary – around 5–10% is common for good service.

How does splitting by what each person ordered work?

Enter each person’s order. Tax, service charge and tip are shared in proportion to what each person ordered, so someone who ordered a ₹300 dish pays less of the tip than someone who ordered ₹900. The shares always add up exactly to the total.

What do the rounding options do?

Round the tip to a whole amount, round the total up, or round each person’s share up so nobody needs coins. Any extra is added to the tip, and the effective tip percentage is shown.

How do I calculate a 20% tip in my head?

Move the decimal point one place left to get 10%, then double it. On a $64 bill: 10% is $6.40, so 20% is $12.80. For 15%, add half of the 10% figure: $6.40 + $3.20 = $9.60.
