What makes a thumbnail get clicks
- One clear focal point – usually a face showing emotion, or the object the video is about.
- Few, big words – three to six words that add to the title instead of repeating it.
- High contrast – bright text on dark backgrounds, with an outline or box behind it.
- Check it small – most people see thumbnails at about 250 pixels wide; zoom out and make sure it still reads.
- Stay consistent – similar colours and fonts across videos help viewers recognise your channel.
Keep the bottom-right corner free of important details – YouTube places the video length there.
Frequently asked questions
What size is a YouTube thumbnail?
1280 × 720 pixels (16:9), under 2 MB, as JPG, PNG or GIF. This maker uses that size by default and keeps JPG downloads under 2 MB automatically.
How do I make text stand out on a thumbnail?
Use 3–6 big words, a heavy font like Impact, and a dark outline or a coloured highlight box. Bright yellow or white on a dark background reads well even at the small size people see in search results.
How do I add my face or logo?
Press “Add picture” and choose the image – a cut-out PNG works best, which you can make with our Background Remover. Make it bigger or smaller, tick Circle for a round profile shape, and drag it into place.
Can I move the text and pictures?
Yes. Drag any layer on the canvas, or select it and use the arrow keys (hold Shift for bigger steps). Drag empty space to move the background photo.
Can I make thumbnails for Instagram, Facebook or blogs?
Yes. Choose a size such as Instagram 1080 × 1080, Facebook link 1200 × 630, X 1600 × 900, LinkedIn 1200 × 627 or Pinterest 1000 × 1500.
Which fonts can I use?
Impact, Arial Black, a clean sans-serif, a serif, a handwritten style and a monospace font. They use fonts already on your device, so they may look slightly different on other computers.
Are my images uploaded?
No. Your design is created entirely in your browser.
Is the thumbnail maker free?
Yes – free with no sign-up and no watermark on your downloads.
