Dates can shift by a day from year to year because the calendar and the Sun’s path don’t line up exactly. Vedic dates are about 24 days later – for example, the Sun is in sidereal Mesha (Aries) from about 14 April to 14 May.

Frequently asked questions

What is my zodiac sign by date of birth?

Your sun sign depends on where the Sun was on your birthday: Aries 21 Mar–19 Apr, Taurus 20 Apr–20 May, Gemini 21 May–20 Jun, Cancer 21 Jun–22 Jul, Leo 23 Jul–22 Aug, Virgo 23 Aug–22 Sep, Libra 23 Sep–22 Oct, Scorpio 23 Oct–21 Nov, Sagittarius 22 Nov–21 Dec, Capricorn 22 Dec–19 Jan, Aquarius 20 Jan–18 Feb and Pisces 19 Feb–20 Mar.

I was born on a cusp – which sign am I?

The Sun changes sign at a specific minute, which shifts by up to a day from year to year. This calculator works out the Sun’s actual position, so with your birth time it tells you exactly which side of the line you’re on. Without a time, it shows when the change happened that day.

Why is my Vedic (Indian) sign different?

Vedic astrology uses the sidereal zodiac, which is fixed to the stars, while western astrology uses the tropical zodiac, tied to the seasons. The two are now about 24° apart (the ayanamsa), so most people’s Vedic sign is one sign earlier. Indian astrology also gives more weight to the Moon sign (rashi) and nakshatra.

How accurate are the moon sign and nakshatra?

The Moon’s position is calculated to within about 0.3°. The Moon moves about 13° a day, so your birth time matters: without it, the tool tells you when the Moon changes sign during the day. For a full birth chart, consult a detailed ephemeris.

How is my Chinese zodiac animal found?

From the Chinese lunar calendar built into your browser. The Chinese year starts at Chinese New Year (between 21 January and 20 February), so if you were born early in the year you may have the previous year’s animal.

Is astrology scientific?

No. Controlled studies have found no link between star signs and personality or compatibility. The astronomy here – where the Sun and Moon were – is real; what it means is tradition and entertainment.

Is my birth date stored?

No. Everything is calculated in your browser and nothing is saved.
